Excel Pivot Table Date Not Grouping
Insert a pivot table and then drag the date field to rows the dates are automatically grouped by year quarter and month by default.

Make sure excel recognizes the whole column as a set of dates. If the column contains only dates you should not see individual entries but a year month day expandable tree.
